Of course, if you have any other questions, please feel free to email our team.
What qualifications do I need to work on a cruise ship?
Requirements vary by role, but to succeed in our recruitment process, you will generally need:
- Relevant professional experience in your field (hospitality, entertainment, retail, marine, medical, etc.).
- An excellent command of English.
- A positive attitude and a commitment to high-standard customer service. Some technical or specialist positions require specific industry licenses or certifications.
What documents will I need?
Most cruise lines require:
• A valid passport
• A seafarer medical certificate (e.g., ENG1, PEME or equivalent)
• Criminal Background checks
• Some roles may require additional certificates such as STCW Basic Safety Training.
• Vaccination records (requirements vary by cruise line)
Do I need previous cruise ship experience?
Not always.
Many hospitality, retail, and entry-level roles welcome candidates with strong land-based experience. However, specialist roles in marine, medical, or entertainment fields often require industry-specific experience.
What is life like working on a cruise ship?
Working at sea is unique, exciting, and fast-paced. You will be part of a diverse, supportive, and friendly crew community while experiencing global destinations. Please be prepared for a rigorous schedule; you will work every day you are onboard, typically for 10-12 hours per day.
What is the salary like?
Salaries are typically paid in US Dollars and vary by position and cruise line. Sales and retail roles often feature a base rate supplemented by commission based on sales results. Starting salaries are approximately $1800 per month. Crucially, most roles include free accommodation and meals, meaning you have minimal living expenses and can save a significant portion of your earnings.
What is accommodation like onboard?
Crew cabins are compact yet functional. Depending on your position, you may have a single cabin or share with another crew member. All cabins are equipped with essentials, including a bed, storage, and a bathroom.
What happens if I fail my medical?
If you do not pass your medical examination, your job offer will unfortunately be rescinded. Depending on the reason, you may be eligible to retake the exam once the issue has been resolved. Please note that in most cases of medical failure, you are responsible for the costs of the examination, and these will not be reimbursed.
Will I get time off to explore ports?
Yes. Most crew members are granted scheduled breaks or time off when the ship is in port. The amount of free time available depends on your specific role and daily operational duties.
How long are the contracts?
Contracts typically range from 4 to 9 months, depending on the role and the cruise line. Senior officers and certain technical positions may follow different rotation schedules.
Do I have to pay for my travel to the ship?
Policies vary by cruise line. Some cover all travel costs upfront, while others require crew members to pay and then provide reimbursement. Your recruiter will clarify the specific policy for your role during the hiring process.
Is food provided?
Yes. All meals are provided at no cost to you in designated crew dining areas.
Can I choose which ship or itinerary I work on?
No. Assignments are determined by operational needs and may be subject to change at short notice.
How long does the recruitment process take?
The process usually takes between 2 and 4 months. This timeline depends on several factors, including the specific role, your prior experience, document processing, medical clearance, and ship schedules. Our onboarding team will keep you updated at every stage.
What are the working hours like?
Expect long days, often involving split shifts, particularly in guest-facing roles. However, you will have structured rest hours and scheduled time off. A standard working day is 10-12 hours, every day.
Will I need to pay any recruitment fees?
No. It is illegal in this industry to charge candidates recruitment fees. As a professional agency, we never charge you for our services. If you are asked for money to secure a job, please be aware this is a major red flag.
Can I bring my family or partner?
Crew members cannot bring family or partners onboard. While some senior officers may have specific privileges, these are rare and strictly role-dependent.
What happens after my first contract?
High-performing crew members are often offered renewals or promotions. After a few months of vacation at home to rest, you would typically return to a ship within the fleet. Many of our candidates build long, successful, and rewarding careers at sea.
Do I pay tax?
Tax obligations depend on your nationality and country of residence. We always recommend you consult with a qualified tax professional in your home country to understand your declarations regarding income earned at sea.
What happens if I get sick onboard?
Every ship has a fully equipped medical centre where you can consult with a doctor or nurse. Necessary medication is provided, and these services are covered for crew members at no cost.
